The club recently celebrated its success in the famous Cambridgeshire Rowing Association (CRA) Bumping Races which took place from Tuesday 22nd to Friday 25th July. A total of fourteen men's eights and four women's eights, all crewed by enthusiastic rowers, took to the River Cam to battle it out in a frantic test of speed, stamina and nerve. The ‘Bumps' have been taking place in Cambridge since the late 1800s, allowing local clubs to compete against each other in a fast-paced, exciting race, mirroring the University Bumps which are exclusive to university crews. The races take place over four days, comprising a series of rounds, which see the crews gather at the starting line with a separation of one and a half lengths between each boat. Setting off at the same time - marked by the firing of a cannon - each boat attempts to catch, or ‘bump', the boat ahead of them without being caught by the crew behind. Boats that make a ‘bump' are moved up a place in the running order for the next day's race and those that manage to achieve a bump each day ‘win their blades' which constitutes one of the greatest accomplishments in the event. In particular, the Cantabrigian Rowing Club's Men's 1st boat - coached by Andy Johnson - rowed valiantly to defend their position as ‘Head of the River' and secured their position once again at the top of the first division, retaining their prestigious title. The Head of the River plate, awarded at the end of the four nights of racing, was displayed at the Club's Bumps Supper where all participants in this very special event celebrate the end of the week in style. James Howarth, Dealer Principal of Cambridge Saab, said: "As a keen oarsman, I have always been proud to support the development of the club and I was delighted to hear of the success of the Head crew in this year's ‘bumps'. The races are both exciting and entertaining to watch. The event plays an important part in the history of the city and its river. Our congratulations go to the ‘Cantabs' and we look forward to supporting them for the 2008/2009 rowing season." The club is also registered with the Saab Partners Programme which allows members to benefit from exclusive savings across Saab's prestigious range of vehicles.
